North Malta’s quiet achiever
Mellieha is perched on a ridge at Malta’s northern tip, looking down over a bay that holds the island’s largest sandy beach. It is less visited than Sliema or St Julian’s, which is its main advantage. The village centre has a few streets of old Maltese townhouses, a sanctuary church built into a cave (one of the oldest Marian shrines in Malta), and a relaxed pace that the tourist-heavy south lacks.
What makes Mellieha worth knowing: it is 5 minutes from Cirkewwa, the ferry terminal for Gozo. It is 20-25 minutes from the Blue Lagoon boat operators in the bay below. Mellieha Bay (the beach) is the longest sandy beach on Malta. And for families, Popeye Village — the 1980 Robert Altman film set, now a theme attraction — is one of the better half-days for children on the island.
It is not the most exciting place to spend an evening. For that, you go to Sliema or St Julian’s. But as a family base or a beach-focused trip, Mellieha makes a strong case.
Mellieha Bay — Malta’s best sandy beach
Mellieha Bay (Il-Bajja ta’ Mellieħa) is the largest sandy beach on the island — roughly 800m to 1 km of genuine sand, shallow water, and manageable waves. It is family-friendly: the gradual gradient means children can wade out 20-30 metres without reaching depth. Lifeguards operate in summer.
Facilities: sun lounger and parasol hire (around 8-12€ per set per day), beach bars and snack kiosks, changing rooms, toilets, showers. Water sports operations run jet ski hire, parasailing, and banana boats from the beach in July–August.
In July–August, Mellieha Bay gets crowded — but not impossibly so. The beach is large enough that you can find space. In May, June, September, and October, the beach is genuinely pleasant — warm water, much more space, lower prices on everything.
Honest note: Mellieha Bay is not turquoise like the Blue Lagoon. The water is a normal Mediterranean blue-green — clear but not the showstopper colour of Comino. It is a beach, not a spectacle. This is fine if what you want is a sandy beach for a beach day.
Popeye Village — the honest assessment
The set built for Robert Altman’s 1980 “Popeye” film (starring Robin Williams and Shelley Duvall) was never demolished. Instead, it became a tourist attraction — a collection of painted wooden buildings on a tiny bay at Anchor Bay, 10 minutes from Mellieha centre.
It is unashamedly kitsch and openly tourist-oriented. For children aged 4-12 who know the Popeye cartoons (or even those who don’t), it is genuinely entertaining: rides, shows, swimming, water inflatables. For adults without children, it is best understood as a photo opportunity and 45 minutes of amusement rather than a serious cultural experience. Admission around 16-22€ per adult, slightly less for children.
Worth it for: families with young children. Skip it if: you are travelling without children and are primarily interested in Malta’s history or nature.
Mellieha: Popeye Village with Optional Private TransfersGozo access from Mellieha
Mellieha’s northern position makes it the best base on Malta for accessing Gozo. The Cirkewwa ferry terminal is 5 minutes from the village by car. Bus 41 from Mellieha (5-10 min) goes directly to Cirkewwa.
Ferries to Mġarr (Gozo) run roughly every 45 minutes in high season, every 1-2 hours in winter. Journey: 25 minutes. Passenger fare: 4.65€ return (paid on the return leg).
If you plan to spend significant time on Gozo, basing yourself in Mellieha rather than Sliema saves you 40-45 minutes each way on the bus to Cirkewwa. Over a 7-day trip with 2 Gozo days, that is 3 hours saved. See the Gozo guide.
Comino and Blue Lagoon from Mellieha
Several boat operators depart directly from Mellieha Bay (the beach) or from the Marfa Ridge area above Cirkewwa. These are some of the cheapest Blue Lagoon access options on the island (shorter journey from the north). In July–August, morning departure boats from Mellieha reach the Blue Lagoon around 8-8:30 AM — before the major operators from Sliema arrive.

Mellieha and the north Malta area have several good dive sites. The waters off Cirkewwa (near the ferry terminal) include a deliberately sunk ferry — the P29 patrol boat — which is one of Malta’s most popular dive wrecks. Clear water, excellent marine life, accessible to intermediate divers.
Several PADI-certified dive centres operate from the Mellieha area. Full open water courses and discover scuba sessions are available:

The village itself is perched on the ridge above the bay — a 10-minute walk or 2-minute drive from the beach (connected by a steep road). The centre has:
- Mellieha Parish Church — A large neo-Gothic church dominating the ridge. The “Sanctuary of Our Lady” is built into the cliff below, with a cave shrine dating back at least to medieval times (some claims extend to Byzantine period).
- Restaurants and bars — More limited than Sliema or St Julian’s, but several good options for dinner. The village is quieter in the evenings; for nightlife you need to travel.
- Shops and essentials — Supermarket, pharmacy, bakery, souvenir shops. Everything a base requires.
Dining recommendation: L-Argjentina (Mellieha centre, terrace with bay views, good Maltese-Mediterranean menu, 25-35€ per person) and Giuseppi’s Bar and Bistro (wine bar focus, excellent local wines, 20-30€ per person).

Frequently asked questions about Mellieha
Is Mellieha Bay good for children?
Yes — it is arguably the best beach on Malta for families with young children. Shallow gradient, sandy entry, lifeguards in summer, facilities nearby. The water temperature reaches 22-23°C by June and stays warm until mid-October.
Is Mellieha a good base for Malta?
Good for families and beach-focused travellers. Less practical than Sliema for transport (the ferry to Valletta runs from Sliema, not Mellieha; you need a bus or car for most destinations). If you prioritise beach, north Malta, and Gozo access, Mellieha is excellent.
How far is Mellieha from Valletta?
About 35 km — 40-50 minutes by car, 55-70 minutes by bus. Not far in absolute terms, but enough that day trips to Valletta require planning.
Is there a sandy beach in Mellieha?
Yes — Mellieha Bay is Malta’s largest sandy beach. Golden Bay (20 min north) is a second option, smaller but more scenic. Ghajn Tuffieha (adjacent to Golden Bay) is rocky but considered one of Malta’s most beautiful bays.
