Playmobil FunPark Malta: the rainy-day option for families
Playmobil FunPark Malta: free entry, what's inside, best ages (3-10), and how to pair it with the National Aquarium for a full rainy-day family programme
What is the Playmobil FunPark?
Most travellers do not realise that Playmobil, the German toy brand, manufactures a significant portion of its global toy output in Malta. The factory is located in Hal Far, in the south of Malta, and alongside the production facility, Playmobil operates a FunPark that is open to visitors.
The FunPark is one of the most unusual family attractions in the Maltese islands: free entry, a legitimate quality children’s experience, and an activity that is available regardless of weather (the indoor sections operate rain or shine). It is the kind of place that does not appear in standard Malta travel guides but that families who discover it tend to rate as a highlight.
What the FunPark contains
The FunPark is divided into outdoor and indoor sections:
Outdoor areas. Large themed play areas with oversized Playmobil characters and play equipment: a pirate ship, a medieval castle, a farm, a construction zone. The areas are sized for children to play in, around, and through the structures. Quality is high — these are purpose-built play environments, not generic playground equipment. Best in good weather; partially usable in light rain.
Indoor sections. Weather-proof play areas continue inside a covered hall adjacent to the outdoor zones. The indoor areas include smaller play scenarios, activity tables where children can engage with Playmobil sets, and an air-conditioned space particularly welcome in July-August.
Factory shop. A well-stocked Playmobil retail shop selling the full product range at Malta-factory prices. The shop is where the FunPark generates revenue — entry is free, purchases are the business model. Prices are not significantly lower than European retail (Playmobil sets cost roughly the same), but the range is exceptional, including some Malta-exclusive sets and items not available elsewhere.
Café. A small café on site with standard hot and cold drinks, snacks, and light lunches. Adequate quality.
Honest age assessment
Ages 2-8: ideal. The play structures, the pirate ship, and the themed areas are pitched perfectly at this age group. Children in this bracket typically want to stay longer than parents have scheduled.
Ages 9-12: adequate. The play structures become slightly basic above age 9. Children who are still genuinely into Playmobil toys will enjoy the shop and the larger sets on display; those who have moved past Playmobil will find 60-90 minutes sufficient.
Teenagers and adults: the FunPark is not for them as a play experience. The factory shop may have adult appeal if Playmobil is part of your life (either for your children at home or for nostalgia). Otherwise, this is firmly a young-children attraction.
Why the free entry matters
Malta family activities add up quickly. Popeye Village (€19 per adult), Mediterraneo marine park (€18-22 per adult), the National Aquarium (€14-18 per adult). A family of 2 adults and 2 children pays €60-90 for each of these. Spread across a week-long Malta trip, the activity costs become significant.
The FunPark’s free entry changes this calculation. A 2.5-hour morning here costs €0 in entry, plus whatever your children talk you into buying in the factory shop (budget accordingly). This makes it valuable as:
- A mid-trip activity to balance costly days
- A rainy-day fallback when beach plans collapse
- A morning activity before a longer afternoon excursion
Getting to the FunPark
Hal Far is in the south of Malta, near Birzebbuġa and the Malta Freeport. It is not the most convenient location relative to most tourist accommodation, but it is reachable:
By car: 20-25 minutes from Valletta, 30-35 minutes from Sliema, 15 minutes from Marsaxlokk. This is the most practical option — Hal Far is an industrial zone not well served by tourist transport.
By bus: Bus 82 from Valletta reaches the Hal Far area; the FunPark is a short walk from the Hal Far bus stop. Journey from Valletta: 40-50 minutes. Not the most convenient public transport connection, but feasible.
Opening hours: typically Monday to Friday 09:00-17:00, Saturday 09:00-13:00 (factory/shop hours). The FunPark area may have slightly different hours — check the official Playmobil Malta website before visiting as hours have varied. Generally closed Sundays and Maltese public holidays.
Building the rainy-day family day
If rain hits your Malta holiday (most likely November-April, though summer showers do occur), the combination of Playmobil FunPark + Malta National Aquarium makes an excellent full family day:
Morning (09:00-12:00): Playmobil FunPark in Hal Far. Free entry, 2.5 hours of play. Lunch (12:00-13:00): Drive north to St Paul’s Bay area (25-30 minutes). Lunch at one of the bay restaurants. Afternoon (13:30-16:30): Malta National Aquarium in St Paul’s Bay.
Malta National Aquarium admission ticket St Paul’s Bay aquarium entryTotal entry cost for 2 adults + 2 children: approximately €40-60 (aquarium only — FunPark is free). A full-day family activity programme at a reasonable budget.
Alternatively, combine the FunPark with Marsaxlokk — the colourful fishing village is 10-15 minutes from Hal Far, making it a natural paired visit. The FunPark morning followed by a luzzu boat ride and seafood lunch at Marsaxlokk is one of Malta’s best authentic family days away from the main tourist circuit.

Frequently asked questions about Playmobil FunPark Malta
Is entry to Playmobil FunPark really free?
Yes, the play areas are free to enter. The factory shop generates revenue through toy sales, and there is a café. Parking is free. There is no entry fee.
Do I need to book in advance for the Playmobil FunPark?
No booking required. Walk-in. During Maltese school holidays and peak summer, the outdoor areas can be busy — the indoor sections absorb overflow.
Can you tour the Playmobil factory?
Factory tours are not offered to the general public as a standard attraction. The FunPark is the public-facing element of the Malta operation. Occasionally special access is offered to groups — check with the facility directly if this interests you.
Is the FunPark suitable for children with additional needs?
The outdoor areas have uneven ground but the main paths are accessible. The indoor sections are flat. The FunPark is generally inclusive in its design. If your child has specific access requirements, contact Playmobil Malta before visiting.
What is in the Playmobil factory shop?
The full current Playmobil range — vehicles, figures, playsets, licensed ranges. Some Malta-exclusive packaging or sets are occasionally available. Prices are similar to European retail. It is a comprehensive retail offer, not a discount outlet.
What is the nearest beach to the Playmobil FunPark?
Birzebbuġa and Pretty Bay are approximately 10 minutes south of Hal Far by car. Pretty Bay is a compact sandy beach — small but accessible. A FunPark morning plus Pretty Bay swim is a reasonable summer day combination, particularly for families with a rental car.
