Xlendi (Gozo)
Xlendi is Gozo's prettiest bay — a narrow inlet framed by cliffs with clear water, seafront restaurants, and boat tours into the south coast sea caves
- Distance from Victoria: ~5 km (10 min by car)
- Bay width: ~50 m — narrow, sheltered
- Boat tours: Depart from Xlendi jetty
- Cliff walk: Path along south cliff to Ta' Ċenċ
Gozo’s most photogenic bay
Xlendi is what people imagine when they think of a Mediterranean bay: a narrow inlet flanked by tall limestone cliffs, clear water running from turquoise in the shallows to deep blue in the centre, and a handful of café tables on a small promenade. It’s small — genuinely small, maybe 50 metres wide at the waterline — and entirely without pretension.
Victoria (Rabat, Gozo) is 5 kilometres away, which means Xlendi is usually included in a Gozo day. Most people arrive by car or taxi, swim or snorkel for an hour, eat lunch at one of the three or four restaurants on the front, and then continue to Dwejra or Marsalforn.
That’s a reasonable approach. But Xlendi rewards those who arrive before 10 am, when the water is dead calm and the morning light catches the south cliff face, or in the early evening, when the day-trippers have gone and the locals come back.
Swimming and snorkelling in Xlendi
The bay offers decent swimming from a small concrete lido platform at the base of the cliffs. There’s no sand beach — entry is from steps and ladders into the sea, typical of most Gozitan swimming spots. The water is clear and the snorkelling on the rocky edges of the bay is good: sea urchins, grouper, octopus, and the occasional moray eel in the crevices.
The deeper channel in the centre of the bay has a cave on the south side that’s accessible by swimming. It’s shallow enough for confident swimmers without gear. Freediving enthusiasts know the bay for its clean walls and reasonable depths close to shore.
Boat tours from Xlendi
The short boat tour from Xlendi Jetty is one of Gozo’s better-value activities:

The tour runs around the south coast cliffs, past the sea caves, and typically includes a stop for swimming in open water. At 2 hours it’s a good ratio of sea time to money. The same boats also run independently in the morning if you want a private tour.

Walking the south cliffs
The cliff path south from Xlendi towards Ta’ Ċenċ is one of Gozo’s best short walks. The path runs along the top of the south cliffs (some of the highest in the Maltese islands at 130 metres) through scrubland and low maquis, with views that extend to Filfla island on clear days. The Ta’ Ċenċ plateau beyond the cliffs has a small Bronze Age dolmen — often missed because there’s no signage pointing to it.
Distance: about 3.5 km one way from Xlendi to Ta’ Ċenċ village. Allow 1.5 hours with stops. The path is unmaintained in places — sturdy shoes are necessary. Do not attempt in summer midday (exposed, no shade, 30+ degrees).
Where to eat in Xlendi
Mermaid Restaurant: the most established seafront option. Reliable seafood — grilled octopus, fresh sea bass, lampuki in season. On the water, with tables on the terrace directly above the bay. Book ahead in peak season (June-September).
Xlendi Bar and Restaurant: simpler and cheaper, at the north end of the promenade. Good for a lunch of fish and chips or a pasta dish.
Patrick’s Restaurant (just above the bay): a step up in ambition — slower service, more refined cooking. The rabbit is good.
Options are limited by the size of the place. In high season (July-August), arrive early or expect a wait. The bay restaurants are genuinely busy at weekend lunchtimes from June through September.
How Xlendi fits into a Gozo day
On a Gozo day trip from Malta, the usual circuit is Victoria (Citadella, morning) → Xlendi (lunch, swim) → Dwejra (afternoon). This covers Gozo’s three most distinctive environments — medieval city, sheltered bay, open coast — in one day.
On a longer Gozo stay, you have more time to arrive at Xlendi in the evening for dinner and sunset over the cliffs, which is when the bay is at its most atmospheric.
For the full Gozo exploration by quad or jeep, Xlendi is usually included as a stop:

Getting to Xlendi
From Victoria: 10 minutes by car or taxi. No direct bus route from the ferry port at Mġarr — a taxi or arranged transfer is easiest.
From Malta via Gozo ferry: The Gozo ferry docks at Mġarr (Gozo’s north). From Mġarr to Xlendi is about 15 minutes by taxi (around 10-12 €). Alternatively, take the Gozo bus to Victoria and then a taxi or tourist minibus to Xlendi.
On a Gozo day tour from Malta: Most day tours include Xlendi as a stop, often with 45-60 minutes for swimming.
Frequently asked questions about Xlendi
Is Xlendi safe for swimming?
Yes, and it’s one of the better sheltered swimming spots in Gozo. The bay faces west and is protected from the north and south winds. In strong easterly or southerly conditions, the bay gets some swell, but it’s generally calm. The water is clean and tested regularly.
Is there a sandy beach in Xlendi?
No. Entry is from rocks and concrete platforms. For sand, Ramla Bay on Gozo’s north coast is the main option.
How far is Xlendi from Victoria?
About 5 km, or 10 minutes by car. The road drops steeply into the bay on the last section — the approach itself is part of the experience.
Is Xlendi busy in summer?
It gets crowded in July and August, especially at weekends. The bay is small, and 50 people swimming makes it feel full. Go early morning or in the evening for the best experience in peak season.
Can you snorkel without a wetsuit in Xlendi?
From May through October, yes. Water temperatures reach 25-27°C in August and September. A wetsuit adds comfort for longer sessions but is not necessary for a 30-45 minute snorkel in summer.
